CMEI Study Abroad and Career Seminar: Lecture by Professor Murakami Naoka
Assistant Professor, Division of Nephrology, Washington University in St. Louis
On May 22, 2025, Dr. Naoka Murakami, a physician-scientist in the Department of Nephrology at Washington University in St. Louis in the United States, spoke as a lecturer at the CMEI Study Abroad and Career Seminar.

Dr. Murakami has built up a track record as a researcher through the PhD-MD program at the University of Tokyo Faculty of Medicine and as a medical resident in Japan and the United States. In a talk entitled “Tipping points and connecting dots,” she reflected on turning points in her career and offered advice to medical students and young doctors on the importance of having a vision, being open-minded, not being afraid of failure, and the importance of teamwork. She also talked about the joys of research, the importance of having mentors, and the current situation of gender equity and women in STEM (science technology engineering, and math) in the United States. The audience, both in person and online, asked questions about English, her experience with gender equity, the impact of the change in government on universities, laboratories, and studying abroad, support from universities, hospitals, and research institutions for life events and career development, differences between Japanese and American students, areas for improvement in Japanese medical education, points to consider when choosing a laboratory, and the balance between clinical practice and research, and she answered them with her own experiences.
